What is Matter?

Matter is an open wireless connectivity protocol developed by the members of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance) that is designed to create interoperability between IoT devices to communicate with each other seamlessly, specifically targeting the smart home and building automation.

Matter is designed to use different IP-based Network Transports like Wi-Fi and Ethernet for applications enabling devices to communicate with the cloud, and Thread for low-bandwidth, ultra-low-power IoT applications. This will allow the selection of the best technology for the dedicated Use Case. Matter also supports commissioning over Bluetooth Low Energy for devices.
