Canadian National Standards Board Updated Flammability Method CAN/CGSB - 4.2 No. 27.5 – 2023

As a mandatory practice for standards bodies, a technical review of the method CAN/CGSB -4.2 No. 27.5 -2008 was completed. As a result of the review process, the method referenced in the Federal Regulations for Health Canada under SOR//2016-194 for Flammability has been updated to include the following changes:
• Updated definitions found in the method
• Incorporated dry cleaning details cited from Method CAN/CGSB-4.2 NO. 30.3 -1994.
• Added Annexes B outlining voluntary burn codes
• Added informative Annex C to describe testing steps related to presence of flame retardants
• Updated figures in the method
• Updated washing and drying parameters in the method
• Clarified editorial verbiage for the reader
Under Textile Flammability Regulations (SOR/2016-194) the flammability requirements for testing have not changed:
o Products without raised fibre surface: The flame spread time for textile products without a raised fibre surface must be greater than 3.5 seconds.
o Products with raised fibre surface: The flame spread time for textile products with a raised fibre surface that exhibits ignition or fusion of its base fibres must be greater than 4 seconds.
o Bedding products requirement also is the same: The flame spread time for bedding without a raised fibre surface, or bedding with a raised fibre surface that exhibits ignition or fusion of its base fibres, must be greater than 7 seconds.
