China Market Surveillance & Recall Cases of Food Contact Products from October to December 2022

Jan. 31 2023

This update provides surveillance results of product quality inspections and recall cases regarding food contact products, which are based on market surveillance results published by local administration of market regulation and notifications released by local defective product administrative centers across China. These non-compliant parameters and risks include technical requirements originated from mandatory and recommended standards.

Notably, various regions in China implemented policies tackling plastic pollution in the recent two years, some disposable plastic tableware have been prohibited; and consumers’ expectations on sustainable development is growing, so biodegradable plastic products on the market is increasing gradually. Therefore local authorities also included these products into inspection accordingly. For example Anhui province inspected 6 batches and found 2 batches do not meet overall migration (4% acetic acid, 50% ethanol) required by mandatory standard. Additionally, Beijing AMR also discovered additive DEHP been used in PE food bags that exceeded its approved scope.
