Japan – Revision of Designated Term under the Household Goods Quality Labeling Act

Jan. 21 2022

JIS L 0204-2 (Fiber Term (Raw Material Division) - Part 2: Chemical Fiber) was revised on November 20, 2020. This amendment changed the designated term "Modacrylic" specified in Appendix 6 of the Household Goods Quality Labeling Law, Article 3, Paragraph 1 Textile Product Quality Labeling Regulations on December 2021.

Polyacrylicnitrile synthetic fibers are classified into 2 designated terms: "アクリル” (acrylic) is for which contains 85% or more of acrylonitrile in terms of mass ratio, and "アクリル系” is for others.

After the amendment, the designated term "アクリル系" was revised to "モダクリル” (Modacrylic); while another designated term “アクリル” (acrylic) was kept unchanged.

This revision became effective on January 1, 2022, with a transition period which is from January 1 to December 31, 2022. Manufacturers and importers must label related products with the new term by December 31, 2022.
