U.S. FDA Finalizes Action Level for Inorganic Arsenic in Apple Juice

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued the Final Guidance for Industry: Action Level for Inorganic Arsenic in Apple Juice, setting an action level of 10 ppb for inorganic arsenic in apple juice. The FDA believes the 10 ppb limit should be achievable, noting that many of the apple juice products they tested had below 3 and 5 ppb. However, some apple juice samples tested had inorganic arsenic levels above 10 ppb.

It should be noted that the FDA expects “to revisit this action level as part of the FDA’s “Closer to Zero” action plan.”

Reminder: In April 2022, the FDA issued the Draft Guidance to Industry on Action Levels for Lead in Juice, proposing an action level of 10 ppb lead in apple juice and 20 ppb lead in other juices.
