Jan. 30 2024
A new European standard, EN 17885:2023, was published in August 2023 for candle accessories such as candle holders, burners and lanterns.
It describes safety requirements and test procedures for fire safety as well as requirements for safety information and its presentation.
This News article gives you a more detailed view for this norm his relativated norms and examples.
Fire safety and product safety labelling
Candle accessories make a significant contribution to the safe burning of candles and, in combination with the candle, they define the safety during use.
Many incidents and causes of fires can be traced back to inadequate safety of candle accessories. The requirements defined in EN 17885 for:
- flammability,
- fire safety such as secondary ignition,
- fire safety of candle container,
- stability,
- surface temperature and
- product labeling
form the basis for reducing fire risks when using candles with accessories.
EN 17885 is currently not a harmonized standard, but within the framework of general product safety according to EU Regulation 2023/988 Article 8 it is currently the best way to represent the “state of the art”.
EN 17885 thus complements the family of already established European standards for candles, for fire safety:
- EN 15493 candles for indoor use
- EN 17616 candles for outdoor use
to sooting behavior:
- EN 15426
and to labelling:
- EN 15494 candles for indoor use
- EN 17617 candles for outdoor use
- EN 16740 „combustible air fresheners“ (e.g. scented candles)
