ASTM D4236-26 for LHAMA in Art Materials Published

Mar. 30 2026

On the 1st of January 2026, ASTM D4236-26 the Standard Practice for Labeling Art Materials for Chronic Health Hazards was published, replacing the previous ASTM D4236-94 (reapproved 2021). The standard describes the requirements for complying with the Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA) in the United States.

Requirement Summary and Effective Dates:

The technical change from previous versions is in Section 2.1.11, where the definition of ‘toxicologist’ has been updated.

Toxicologists involved in ASTM D4236-26 must now be board-certified through a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (ABT). Alternatively, if the Toxicologist is also a Physician, then they may be certified by either the ABT, or the American Board of Preventative Medicine (ABPM) with a specialty in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The rest of the updated standard mainly incorporates editorial changes for clarification of terms and other typographical updates.

The exact wording of the change to Section 2.1.11 is shown below, with changed parts italicized:
