ASTM F3096, Standard Performance Specification for Tipover Restraint(s) Used with Clothing Storage Unit(s) Revised

Jun. 2 2023

ASTM F3096-23 has been published. This safety specification is intended to define the test method and other requirements for tipover restraints as required in ASTM F2057-23, Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units. ASTM F2057-23 states:

  • An anti-tip device shall be included with each item of furniture covered under the scope of this safety specification for attachment by the consumer.
  • The anti-tip device provided shall meet the requirement of Specification ASTM F3096.

This specification assesses the strength of the tipover restraint only, and does not address the in situ performance of the tipover restraint.

A tipover restraint is a supplemental device that aids in the prevention of tipover.

The test method is to gradually, over a period of not less than 2 seconds nor greater than 15 seconds, apply the static load of 60 pounds (27.22 kg) and maintain for an additional 30 seconds.

ASTM F3096-23 was revised to increase the static load applied from 50 pounds to 60 pounds. This was the only change to the standard.

The total weight of 60 pounds is above the 95th percentile weight of a child up to 72 months.
