In September of 2024, ASTM International announced the publication of a new safety specification for Nursing Pillows. The new specification, designated as ASTM F3669-24, provides general and performance requirements, marking and labeling requirements, and instructional literature requirements for nursing pillows.
Introduction
This safety specification was developed to address incidents associated with nursing pillows identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
This safety specification covers any stuffed, filled, or molded-foam product intended, marketed, or designed to position and support an infant close to a caregiver’s body while nursing or bottle feeding. In general, this product will be used for infants from newborn until the infant ceases nursing or bottle feeding. These products rest upon, wrap around, or are worn by a caregiver in a seated or reclined position.
The safety specification sets forth the following requirements:
General Requirements
- Lead in paints
- No small part choking hazards
- No hazardous sharp points or sharp edges
- Requirements for toys
- Removal of components
- Permanency of labels and warnings
Performance Requirements
- Infant restraint system
- Infant support surface firmness
- Inner wall firmness
- Product conditioning firmness
- Infant containment
- Seam strength
- Caregiver attachment strength
Marking and Labeling Requirements
All nursing pillows shall comply with the specified requirements for warning statements on the product, packaging, and within the instructional literature.
