The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) released a revised version of ASTM F3681-25 in July of 2025. The standard was originally created in 2024 to address hazards identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which includes lacerations and impalement from the shaft/pole of a windblown airborne beach umbrella.
Summary of Modifications to ASTM F3681-25
• Adding a definition for “integrated”
• Editorial changes and labeling updates
• Mechanical Pull Test of Beach Umbrella/Anchor System – Removed the option of testing without a canopy
o Poles that have separate top and bottom sections are now required to be tested assembled
o The entire pole of the umbrella must now be tilted (20 degrees)
o Force is applied to entire unit, even if bottom is detachable
o If the pole has one or more segments, they must remain connected; or if the umbrella and/or the anchor fails to function in any way, the test of the effectiveness of the anchor device is compromised and the test has failed (new test criteria)
o Figures 2 – 4 : Clarifies that the entire umbrella is to be tested
• Wind Tunnel Test of Beach Umbrella/Anchor System
o New If the umbrella canopy inverts, dislodges from the bottom pole, or fails to function in any way, including failing to remain fully opened, or if the umbrella frame is damaged in any way, the test of the effectiveness of the anchor device is compromised, and the test has failed (new test criteria)
• Marking and Labeling
o For beach umbrellas, the actual square footage of the canopy plane shall be prominently displayed on the packaging
o Warning statement revised: Always use umbrella with ASTM F3681 compliant anchor. If umbrella does not include anchor, you must use an ASTM F3681 compliant anchor.
o Secure umbrella and anchor. Follow manufacturer’s setup instructions.
o Be aware of sudden wind gusts. Immediately close canopy if umbrella becomes unstable.
o The label must contain text in bold, clear font, “ANCHOR MEETS ASTM F3681 FOR WIND SPEEDS UP TO 30 MPH"
