Jul. 7 2026

Australia has published the Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2026, replacing the 2020 standard. Effective 26 June 2026, it strengthens requirements on product scope, warnings, and alignment with ISO-based safety provisions to help reduce drowning risks. Published on 25 June 2026, the new standard aims to improve aquatic toy safety and enhance protection for young children from water-related hazards.

An aquatic toy is defined as a toy intended to a) to bear the mass of a child under 14 years of age; and b) for use in play in shallow water by a child.

Aquatic toys can be inflatable or non-inflatable and may be designed to be worn on or attached to the body. The standard does not apply to products such as beach balls, surfboards, bodyboards, kickboards, inflatable air beds, or larger inflatable boats intended solely for deep-water use.

In addition, all mandatory safety warnings must be a) Provided in English; and b) Clearly legible; and 3) clearly visible and d) is indelible.

Effective Date and Transition Period: The Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2026 took effect on 26 June 2026 with a 2-year transition period. During this period, suppliers may comply with either the 2020 or 2026 Standard. After the transition period, all aquatic toys supplied in Australia must comply with the 2026 Standard.
