Bureau Veritas Buffalo Offers Fast, Economical Screening for PFAS Compounds

Aug. 5 2025

‘Forever Chemicals,’ or the PFAS family, are a top area of concern for consumers and regulators. Reputation and brand damage from selling products containing PFAS can be severe. But brands and retailers are in difficult position, as testing for the presence of PFAS family compounds require each compound be assessed individually, meaning until now it has been both expensive and time consuming.

Bureau Veritas, a world leader in testing, inspection, and certification services, is pleased to announce the expansion of our already extensive chemical testing services with the addition of Total Fluorine Testing capabilities at our Buffalo, New York laboratory. This unique service provides an efficient and cost-effective screening method that addresses PFAS consumer concerns and increasing regulations. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is commonly found in consumer products such as cookware, textiles, and coated fabrics.

The Bureau Veritas Buffalo laboratory continues to invest in advanced instrumentation to support chemical and restricted substances in various Consumer Products.  The addition of state-of-the-art Ion Chromatography and combustion digestion systems enables precise and reliable analysis of Total Fluorine. This powerful combination allows Bureau Veritas to meet the increasing industry demand for thorough PFAS screening, helping organizations better understand potential environmental and health risks associated with fluorinated compounds.

"It’s been our strategy to expand our analytical chemistry capabilities in our Buffalo, NY location as the regulatory environment changes.  We offer full-service testing (performance, quality and compliance) across all product categories. Our clients benefit by having an in-country partner for technical support and rapid service delivery.  The addition of this screening method streamlines the PFAS testing process," said Becky Brubaker, BV Buffalo Lab General Manager. "This expands our Total Fluorine Testing capabilities, which were previously available at other Bureau Veritas locations."

Total Fluorine Testing provides a quantifiable screening tool identifying the potential presence of PFAS, which have become a growing concern due to their widespread use and potential environmental and health impacts. This method offers several advantages over traditional targeted PFAS analysis, including:

Faster turnaround times and reduced costs compared to individual PFAS analyses

Ability to detect the potential presence of PFAS compounds, even those not included in the targeted list.

Streamlined workflow digital solutions that can help prioritize samples for more detailed PFAS characterization.

By integrating Total Fluorine quantification into your workflow, you can gain a more complete understanding of whether fluorine is intentionally added or a contamination in your samples.
