the First certificate issued globally by the E5 Type Approval Authority
June 30, 2023, Italy, Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services (‘BVCPS’) has today announced the issuance of the first UNECE R155 certificate to Chinese Zhongtong Bus Holding Co., Ltd. The assessment was done by Bureau Veritas Certest and the certificate was issued globally by a Swedish Transport Agency E5 Type Approval Authority.
Following BVCPS’ designation as an E5 Technical Service by the Swedish Transport Agency earlier in 2023 – which expanded its’ homologation services scope globally to include the UN’s UNECE R155 and R156 regulations for Cybersecurity – the certificate issued to Zhongtong Bus Holding Co., Ltd. represents a key step forward for BVCPS’ Cybersecurity services.
UNECE’s R155 and R156 serve to harmonize standards surrounding automotive cybersecurity, and they relate to Cybersecurity and Software Updates including OTA Updates in vehicles respectively. Around 25% of vehicles sold globally are sold in territories where R155 and R156 are applied, including European Union, Japan, and South Korea.
R155 focuses on uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to cybersecurity management systems, while R156 focuses on vehicle software update processes and software update management systems.
Granting certification to Zhongtong Bus Holding Co., Ltd.– a major bus maker based in Liaocheng, China – bolsters Bureau Veritas’ record in Automotive Cybersecurity services at a time when vehicles are becoming increasingly connected to consumer devices and the wider IoT – enabling more advanced automobiles, but also increasing the potential for malicious cyber-attacks on vehicles.
Pascal LeRay, Bureau Veritas Head of Cybersecurity globally, said of the certification, “I’m proud of this announcement and the step forward it represents in the ongoing provision of Cybersecurity certification globally. UNECE’s R155 and R156 regulations are present in markets where over a quarter of vehicles sold globally each year are sold, and are crucial in reducing the risk to passengers of malicious cyberattack. Zhongtong’s certification is a strong development for BVCPS’ Automotive TIC services, and demonstrates the continued development of Bureau Veritas’ scope of Cybersecurity as a whole.”
