Bureau Veritas Mexico ISO 17025 Accredited to ASTM F2057-23 Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units
Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, a leading testing, inspection and certification provider, announces its Puebla, Mexico laboratory is now ISO 17025 accredited (view certificate) to ASTM F2057-23 Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units.
The U.S. CPSC adopted the ASTM F2057-23 voluntary safety standard as a mandatory requirement and published a notice on May 4, 2023 in the Federal Register that states the direct final rule is effective September 1, 2023.
The new standard is part of efforts to implement the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth (STURDY) Act, which aims to protect children from furniture tip-overs. The STURDY Act requires the CPSC to adopt a mandatory stability standard that uses a test weight of 60 pounds and simulates real-world use. The STURDY Act also requires clothing storage units (CSU) to pass objective, repeatable and measurable tests that simulate real-world use, taking into account the weight of small children, impact on stability resulting from placement on carpeted surfaces, drawers with items in them, multiple open drawers, and dynamic forces. This standard were developed to protect children up to 72 months of age from tip-over-related death or injury.
ASTM F2057-23 is applicable to free-standing clothing storage units, including but not limited to chests, chests of drawers, drawer chests, armoires, chifferobes, bureaus, door chests, and dressers, which are 27 in. or greater in height, 30 lb (13.6 kg) or greater in mass, and contain 3.2 ft3 or greater of enclosed storage volume. The standard applies to CSUs manufactured on or after September 1, 2023.
As one of the first third-party test lab in Mexico to receive ISO 17025 accreditation to test to the new ASTM F2057-23 standard, the BV Mexico lab has the testing capability and technical knowledge to confirm compliance to the new standard. Their mission is to help you understand the requirements and walk you through the testing process.
