Enforcement Trends
- The product category with the highest number of notices was Food (including alcoholic beverages) & Herbal Supplements, which accounted for 70% of all notices this quarter. Of those, the notices were: 721 for lead, 198 for cadmium, 99 for lead and cadmium, 35 for one or more PFAS chemical (PFOA/PFOS/PFNA), 8 for two or more chemicals, 3 for mercury, 1 for arsenic, and 1 for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. In addition, there were notices for chemicals that have not been included in food and herbal supplement notices in the past: 52 for aflatoxin, 10 for aflatoxin ochratoxin A/fumonisin B1, 5 for fumonisin B1 and 2 for fumonisin B1/ochratoxin A.
- Chemical Trends:
- 74% of all notices were for metals: 907 for lead, 198 for cadmium, 103 for two or more metals, 4 for mercury, 4 for nickel and 1 for arsenic.
- 9% of all notices were for phthalates.
- Additional PFAS note: There were 49 notices that included PFOA/PFOS/PFNA.
- Additional Hexavalent Chromium note: There was an uptick in the amount of notices and an expanded scope of leather products. The 47 notices this quarter for leather goods included, but were not limited to gloves, footwear, bracelets/watches, bags and cases (such as camera bags, pencil cases, phone cases and wallets).
