California Governor Vetoes Three PFAS Related Bills

Oct. 14 2023

The California Governor vetoed three PFAS related bills with the same reasons for their rejection. All three bills would be banned intentionally added PFAS in specific product types.

The vetoed bills are:

  • AB246, Product safety: menstrual products: perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances
  • AB727, Product safety: cleaning products and floor sealers or floor finishes: perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances
  • AB1423, Product safety: PFAS: artificial turf or synthetic surfaces

The Governor indicated that he supports the bills’ intentions to address safety concerns related to PFAS presence in consumer products.  However, he feels the bills do not provide adequate protection to California consumers since no regulatory oversight to address compliance or enforcement has been included.  He notes that this has been a challenge with other PFAS related legislation that he signed into laws previously and directs the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to work with the bills’ authors and the legislature to come up with a solution.
