China Market Surveillance & Recall Cases of Food Contact Products in the First Half of 2026

Aug. 12 2026

This update provides finding of product quality inspections and recall cases regarding food contact products, which are based on market surveillance results and recalls published by local administration of market regulation and local defective product administration centers across China respectively. These non-compliant parameters and recall cases include technical requirements originated from China mandatory and recommended standards.

Notably, one batch of melamine plastic tableware was found to have illegally added plant fibers during the 2025 national level market surveillance (reported earlier this year). According to GB 4806.7-2023, the use of plant fibers as additives in plastics must comply with relevant safety standards. Currently, only coffee grounds are explicitly permitted for use in biodegradable plastics such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS), provided certain technical requirements are met. This is the first case we have recorded where a plastic material has been directly considered non-compliant due to the illegal addition of plant fibers.
