China Market Updates: New Substances and Materials Safe for Food Contact Use Approved by National Health Commission

The National Health Commission (NHC) of China announced new food ingredients and related products (including food contact materials and additives) that have been evaluated and approved in notification No. 8 and No.10 of 2023. This update lists 9 new food contact resins and additives.

Notably, recently published mandatory standard GB 4806.7-2023 stipulates that plant fiber can be added into food contact plastic only when it has been permitted. Coffee grounds have been permitted of adding into polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) according to notification No.10 of 2023, which is the first raw plant fiber approved in China. Moreover, both PLA, PBS are biodegradable plastics, and they are still biodegradable if added with coffee grounds, apparently this permission also balanced the needs of sustainability.
