China Standard GB/T 22796-2021 Bedding to be put into Implementation From February 1st, 2022

China bedding standard GB/T 22796-2021 will be put into implementation from February 1st, 2022. It supersedes 5 product standards GB/T 22796-2009 Quilts, Quilt cover, GB/T 22797-2009 Sheet, GB/T 22843-2009 Cushion and pillow, GB/T 22844-2009 Matched bedding and GB/T 22855-2009 Raschel bedding.  

Scope of GB/T 22796-2021
This standard is applicable to beddings whose shell and lining are made of textile fabrics, with or without fillings of natural or chemical fibers in China market. Other products can also refer to this standard. This standard is not applicable to products with fillings of down & feather and/or silk. This standard is not applicable to beddings for infants of 36 months and below.   

Overview 
The basic properties of the products shall comply with GB 18401 and children products shall comply with GB 31701. The fillings of natural or chemical fibers shall comply with GB 18383. This standard contains the requirements in terms of intrinsic quality, appearance quality, and workmanship quality. Bedding products need to meet requirements such as fiber content, oil content of fillings, mass deviation of fillings, compression and recovery property, tensile strength, bursting strength, pilling, falling off of fibers, dimensional change after washing, dimensional change after dry clean, colourfastness (colourfastness to light, colourfastness to washing with soap and soda, colourfastness to dry clean, colourfastness to perspiration and colourfastness to rubbing). Different bedding products need to meet some of the above quality requirements which can be found in GB/T 22796-2021 Table 1 according to section 4.5. Appearance and workmanship quality of bedding items need to follow requirements which can be found in GB/T 22796-2021 Table 2 – 4. 

Major changes:
Intrinsic quality
1) Revised the requirement of superior grade for mass deviation of fillings;
2) Revised the requirement of superior grade and first grade for compression and recovery property for raschel beddings;
3) Added the requirement of bursting strength for knitted fabrics;
4) Revised the requirement for dimensional change after washing, and added the requirement for dimensional change of knitted fabrics;
5) Revised the requirement of qualified grade for colourfastness to wet rubbing (except dark colour products);
6) Added the test method and evaluation method for pilling of knitted fabrics;
7) Added the evaluation method for pilling of woven fabrics;
8) Added the test method for dimensional change after dry clean for quilt products;
9) Revised the test method of dimensional change after dry clean for cushions and pillows. 

Appearance quality and workmanship quality
1) Deleted “Only negative deviation of size tolerance is tested for quilt cover”;
2) Revised the requirement of uneven length and width for finished products;
3) Added the requirements of appearance quality for knitted beddings;
4) Deleted the requirement of stitch density for sewing quality.
5) Added the requirement for metal residues that may be harmful to human body. 

Instruction of use
In GB/T 22796-2021, instruction of use shall comply with GB/T 5296.4 and GB 18401, and instruction of use for children products shall comply with GB 31701. If necessary, other key contents can be included. The width and length shall be labeled for the product size. For products with fillings, the filling mass shall be labeled. The filling mass labeling for pillows and cushions are not required. It is alright not to label the size for products with irregular shape, or the maximum dimension can be labeled, if necessary.
