CSA Publishes Standard for Grill Brush Safety

Jan. 14 2020

On December 19, 2019, the CSA Group published CSA Z630:19, Barbecue Grill Brushes. This safety standard was issued in response to multiple reports of metal bristles releasing from grill cleaning brushes and being ingested via food cooked on a barbecue grill. The standard introduced new performance requirements for bristle attachment strength, cycle durability requirements, and also labeling requirements.

Background of Grill Brush Bristle Hazards
For consumers, the most commonly used tool to clean a barbecue grill is the traditional wire bristled brush. Unfortunately there may be an unrecognized hazard associated with these products that many consumers are unaware of. Use of a wire bristle brush to remove stuck-on food from grill grates can cause small, sharp bristles or bristle fragments to break off and get stuck to the grill’s cooking surface. On subsequent use, the released bristles may adhere to food and accidentally be ingested.

In 2017 alone, at least nine incidents of Canadians ingesting wire bristles from barbecue brushes were reported. In response, Health Canada and the Retail Council of Canada commissioned the development of a voluntary safety standard for barbecue brushes, which Bureau Veritas participated in the creation of. The voluntary safety standard establishes ways to reduce the risk that loose bristles will cause injuries to Canadians by establishing performance criteria, including labeling, instructions for use, bristle retention strength, and durability testing to identify bristle loss.
