Feb. 24 2026

The CEN has published EN 71-5:2025, which covers requirements for chemical toys/chemical sets other than experimental sets

Requirement Summary and Effective Dates:

On 10 December 2025, CEN published revised version of EN 71-5 on Chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets.
EN 71-5:2025 is expected to be published in the Official Journal of the EU as a harmonized standard under the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.
Date of withdrawal of previous version of EN 71-5 was set by CEN for 31 December 2026.

The standard applies specifically to:
—plaster of Paris (gypsum) moulding sets;
—oven-hardening plasticised PVC modelling clay sets;
—polystyrene granules sets;
—embedding sets;
—adhesives, paints, lacquers, varnishes, thinners and cleaning agents (solvents), supplied or recommended in model sets;
And
— slime kits. Slime kits are newly inserted in the standard (new section 8) [Slime kit is defined as a toy containing materials intended to prepare a slime or a slime type product which is intended for play use]

EN 71-5 specifies requirements for substances and mixtures supplied in these chemical toys (volume, concentration, type of substances…) but also includes requirements for markings, warnings, safety rules, contents list, instructions for use and first aid information.

In this new edition, in addition to new requirements for slime kits, a new normative Annex E with a non-exhaustive list of colourants with purity requirements was added.
A new normative Annex F was added for booster substances (substance used for increasing the efficacy of preservatives).
