The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has published the latest version of the standard for finger paints, EN 71-7:2025.
Requirement Summary and Effective Dates:
On October 29th, 2025, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published the 2025 version of EN 71-7, part 7 of the standard for the Safety of Toys, regarding the Requirements and Test Methods for Finger Paints. It supersedes the previous EN 71-7:2014+A3:2020 version.
Revisions include:
- In Section 3, new terms and definitions have been added for pigment (3.3), dyestuff (3.4), and booster substance (3.11) and the definition of colourant (3.2) has been revised.
- In Section 4.6 (formerly 4.7): The test method for pH value has been changed from EN ISO 787-9 to EN ISO 19396-1:2025.
- In Section 4.9, requirements for booster substances have been added.
- In Annex A, the informative “non-exhaustive list of colourants which are used in finger paints, and need to be in compliance with both the general and specified purity requirements” has been revised.
- In Annex B, the normative “list of preservatives allowed for use in finger paints” has been revised.
- In Annex C, the examples of “ingredients used in the manufacture of finger paints” have been revised, in particular by adding booster substances, with 3 examples.
Removals include:
- In the former Section 4.4, the requirements on migration of certain elements (normative reference to EN 71-3) have been deleted because EN 71-3 always applies to finger paints.
- In the former Section 4.9, the requirements on N-nitrosamines (normative reference to EN 71-12) have been deleted because EN 71-12 always applies to finger paints.
