Health Canada Issues Safety Notice for Products Containing Button and Coin Batteries

Health Canada’s mandate includes helping to protect the public by addressing or preventing dangers to human health or safety posed by consumer products. For that purpose, Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations.

Based on the danger to human health or safety assessment, Health Canada has determined that consumer products containing button/coin batteries, that do not conform to the applicable criteria set out in the following standards or equivalent pose an ingestion hazard:

• For consumer products that are not toys: ANSI/UL 4200A-23 - Standard for Safety for Products Incorporating Button Batteries or Coin Cell Batteries, or the equivalent
• For toys: ASTM F963-23 - Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety, or the equivalent

Additional Packaging and Labeling Requirements:

Reclosable and non-reclosable packaging for button/coin batteries that do not conform to the applicable criteria set out in multiple regulations for Child Resistant Packaging.

Labelling for consumer products containing button/coin batteries or button/coin batteries sold alone that do not conform to the applicable criteria set out in multiple ANSI/UL/CSA standards and regulations for Products Incorporating Button Batteries or Coin Cell Batteries.

Reclosable and non-reclosable packaging for button/coin batteries that do not conform to the applicable criteria set out in multiple ANSI/IEC/ISO/CSA standards and regulations for Products Incorporating Button Batteries or Coin Cell Batteries.

Labelling for consumer products containing button/coin batteries or button/coin batteries sold alone that do not conform to the applicable criteria set out in multiple ANSI/IEC/ISO/CSA/ASTM standards.
