OEHHA Listing of PFOA and Its Salts Under California Proposition 65

Mar. 2 2022

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has added perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) (CAS RN 335-67-1) to the list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer within California Proposition 65.

Background
PFOA is an 8 chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS).  It is used to provide water, oil and stain repellence finishes for textiles and apparel, leather, paper and cardboard, paints, lacquers and other uses such as non-woven medical garments, floor waxes, and firefighting foam.

OEHHA Action:
California’s determined that PFOA can cause cancer.  Therefore, for the purposes of Proposition 65, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is adding perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) (CAS RN 335-67-1) to the list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, effective February 25, 2022.  The warning requirement for exposure to PFOA will take effect on February 25, 2023, at which time 60 day notices could be issued.

Additional Information:
Please see OEHHA’s announcement: https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/crnr/notice-interested-parties-chemical-listed-effective-february-25-2022-known-state

Bureau Veritas will monitor the OEHHA website for 60 Day Notices pertaining to PFOA, as notices can be issued after a chemical has been listed for one year.
