What is PEFCR?
The PEF Product Category Rules (PEFCR) are Product Environmental Footprint rules specific to different product groups/categories and Annex V is a specifc rule which refers to the Environmental Footprint of apparel and footwear.
APPAREL AND FOOTWEAR PEFCR – ANNEX V
The Apparel & Footwear PEFCR was developed to serve as a common language, standardising how the environmental performance of apparel and fashion products is measured, communicated, and improved. Currently V2 published March 2024, still under review and Draft ONLY.
Prepared by the Technical Secretariat comprising of Brands, NGOs and Professional Organisations and coordinated by Cascale (formerly Sustainable Apparel Coalition) Consists of proposed durability tables for products made from textiles, giving basic, moderate and aspirational requirements.
Whilst implementation becomes regulatory in 2027, it is prudent to start preparations and development or more sustainable and durable practices within your supply chain now.
What is the end goal for PEF ?
Having an organisational standard and being able to measure environmental impact will help in tackling greenwashing and false sustainability claims. At the same time helping consumers visualise to what extent a product or companies sustainability credentials actually mean.
