Published: AFIRM Group RSL 2025; ASTM PFAS Method Guide; AAFA RSL v25

February 2025 has brought a new version of Restricted Substances Lists (RSL) from AFIRM Group and American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA).  In addition, ASTM has completed a guide outlining various methods for testing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in products. All are now published and available.

AFIRM Group RSL Updates
As of February 1, 2025, the following updates were made to the AFIRM Group RSL:

  • Updated several test methods and regulatory references to current versions throughout
  • Revised limits for Bisphenols based on material type
  • Added three Cyclosiloxanes based on REACH and SVHCs
  • Renamed “Flame Retardants” to “Brominated and Organophosphorus Substances” and added Triphenyl Phosphate (TPP) to this section
  • Updated PFAS section by lowering Total Organic Fluorine limit to 50 ppm, dividing the PFOS restrictions and adding PFHxA and its salts and related substances
  • Added UV 326
  • Updated Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Appendix and list

AAFA RSL Updates
AAFA RSL Task Force completed the biannual review of their RSL this month. Updates were made to the following sections related to country requirements: APEO AP, Arylamines, Disperse Dyes, Flame Retardants, Formaldehyde, Heavy Metals (extractable) and Heavy Metals (soluble).

ASTM F3700-25, Standard Guide for Selecting and Applying Analytical Methods to Evaluate PFAS in Consumer and Related Products
ASTM F3700-25 is now a published guide related to PFAS test methods for consumer and related products. It outlines different test methods to test for PFAS, as well as screening methods, and discusses application and selection of methods that can be used depending on the company’s end goal for data.  Note the guide does not create new test methods.
