Updates to ASTM F2417 Candle Fire Safety Standard

The ASTM subcommittee group responsible for the fire safety of candles recently published a revised version of the ASTM F2417. This revision included several changes which addressed safety issues and the inclusion of candle making kits.

ASTM F2417 Background
ASTM F15.45, the subcommittee responsible for the candle and candle accessory fire safety testing has been actively monitoring candle related recalls and incident reports. As a result, the group has made several updates to the appropriate testing standards to address recent concerns that were identified.

The update, published in August 2023, addressed multiple points within the ASTM F2417 Standard Specification for Fire Safety for Candles. A majority of the tests were unchanged, however there were multiple areas affected.

Notable Changes: ASTM F2417-23 – Candle Standard

Candle Making Kits:
A new definition of candle making kits was added to F2417. In support of the addition, Section X4 has been added to include a description, instructions for manufacturers, guidance for vendors, testing scope, and labeling of candle making kits.

Wick Migration/ Leaning:
Safety requirements were added to F2417 for wick migration and wick leaning. Section X2 was rewritten to include more information and guidance on the end of useful life of a candle. The section describes failure modes and the resulting conditions experienced at the end of useful life. The revised section also goes into further detail about solutions to dangerous situations which are experienced at end of useful life.
