U.S. CPSC Approves Final Rule for Dressers and Other Clothing Storage Units

On Wednesday October 19, 2022 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have approved a new federal mandatory safety standard for clothing storage units (CSUs) that will change the testing and labeling of clothing storage units.

This safety standard is intended to reduce injuries and deaths associated with clothing storage units tipping over. Young children are most at risk of injury or death from tip over incidents. Types of furniture include chests, bureaus, dressers, armoires, wardrobes, chests of drawers, drawer chests, chifforobes and door chests.

The Commission voted 3 to 1 to approve the standard. The safety standard will take effect 180 days after it is published in the Federal Register.

In other related news, the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act (STURDY), has passed the US Senate with an amendment by unanimous consent on September 29, 2022. The Act now proceeds to the US House of Representatives where it has previously been passed.

The amendment to the STURDY Act directs the CPSC to adopt ASTM F2057 as the mandatory standard required by STURDY, provided that ASTM F2057 is updated to meet all of the performance requirements outlined in the STURDY Act.
