U.S. CPSC Publishes Direct Final Rule for Bedside Sleepers

On Tuesday May 9, 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) staff published within the Federal Register a Direct Final Rule for 16 CFR Part 1222, Safety Standard for Bedside Sleepers. 16 CFR Part 1222 will now reference ASTM F2906-23, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bedside Sleepers as mandatory with one modification.

The previous version of the 16 CFR 1222 referenced the ASTM F2906-13 as mandatory with three editorial modifications. The F2906 was reapproved in 2019 and then was revised in 2022 and 2023 and only added (1) a clarification to the bedside sleeper attachment means performance requirement test and (2) a minor language addition to a warning statement for the rail that can be lowered and positioned against the adult bed.

The modification to the 16 CFR 1222 only changes the references within the ASTM F2906-23 standard to state that a bedside sleeper must also meet 16 CFR 1218 and not ASTM F2194-23.

This Direct Final Rule will become effective August 5, 2023 unless the CPSC receives any significant or adverse comments by June 8, 2023.
