Altitude/Pressure

Altitude/Pressure

Overview
The object is generally to assess the performance of equipment at high and low altitudes.  The cooling capacity of equipment is diminished at higher altitudes.  Pressure sensitive components and seals can malfunction at extreme altitudes/pressures.

Common Standards
• IEC 60068-2-13 low air pressure test method
• IEC 60068-2-41 combined dry heat/low air pressure
• ASTM D653 test method for determining the effects of high altitude on packaging systems.

Common product standards – incorporate 1 or more altitude tests
• GR-3108-CORE Generic requirements for network equipment in the outside plant- telecom/datacom
• GR-63-CORE NEBS requirements for Central Offices- telecom/datacom
• GR-3160-CORE NEBS requirements for Data Center Equipment - telecom/datacom
• GR-3178-CORE Generic requirements for Wireless Transceiver Facilities
• MIL-STD-810 Military standard, but can often be used for industrial/outdoor products to demonstrate robustness.
