Ingress Protection

Ingress Protection

Overview
Typically the object is to determine degree of protection provided by an enclosure with regard to one or more of the following:

1. Protection of persons against access to hazardous parts inside an electrical enclosure;
2. Protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects;
3. Protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against the harmful effects due to the ingress of water.

Common Standards
IEC 60529 – test method referenced in a lot of product safety standards. This is where the typical IP rating (i.e. IP24, IP56, IP66, etc) used on products comes from.  The first numeral describes the degree of protection against solid objects and dust.  The second numeral describes the degree of protection against the ingress of water.

ISO 20653 – test method referenced in automotive standards such as GMW3172, MBN LV124, DC 10611.

IEC 60068-2-18 – test method referenced by international standards such as EN 300 019. It is accesses the ability of equipment to resist water during transport, storage, and use.
