Ultraviolet Resistance

Ultraviolet Resistance

Overview
UV radiation from exposure to sunlight causes chemical breakdown in the plastics and coatings used on equipment installed in the outdoor environment.  This can result in the loss of mechanical or environmental integrity, fading of labels or loss of corrosion protection from paint or other coatings. It can be difficult to replicate real world environments in a laboratory due to the natural variability of weather. However, rapid testing in test chamber can assist in assessing the resistance of plastics to exposure to UV light.  Usually the part is exposed to a period of UV radiation and then some physical attribute is accessed such as surface chalking, fading, cracking, tensile strength, or elongation.

Bureau Veritas Littleton Equipment/Capabilities
• Q-LAB Q-SUN-XE-HS test chamber.  It is a Xenon Arc chamber using daylight filters.  It reproduces a full-spectrum of sunlight and rain. The sample tray is approximately 2ft x 3ft.
