Toy Safety Standard EN71-1:2026 Published

The revised version of toy safety standard EN71-1:2026 (Safety of Toys – Mechanical and Physical Properties) was published at the end of January 2026.

This standard will replace the current version of EN71-1 (EN71-1:2014+A1:2018).

Key Changes Include:

Expanding materials:
• Revised requirements and test method for expanding materials.

Exemptions for trampolines covered by EN71-14:
• Exemptions have been added to multiple clauses for trampolines covered by EN71-14. 
These changes are designed to eliminate the conflicts between the two standards.

Enclosures:
• Updated and clarified the requirements for toys which a child can enter and toys that fully enclose the head with respect to ventilation, particularly where multiple openings are used.
• New test method added for assessing the escape force of toys which a child can enter.

Toys intended to bear the mass of a child:
• All requirements for toys intended to bear the mass of a child have been consolidated under this clause.
• Requirements and test methods have been updated and reformatted.

Food-imitating toys:
• New requirements added to address the potential choking hazards posed by toys which are a realistic food imitation or that contain accessible components which are realistic food imitation.

Toys intended for children under 36 months – General requirements:
• Exemption from the small parts requirements added for certain types of sand.
• Clarification regarding which components the test for paperboard is applied to.
• Clarification that the soaking test applies to glued wooden components (as well as glued wooden toys).

Packaging:
• Clarification that packaging requirements apply regardless of whether the toy is marked for adult assembly.

Warnings, markings and instructions for use:
• Clarification that the word “warning” or “warnings” may be used once when several warnings are required.
• Clarification that where the 0-3 age warning symbol is used, it is to be proceeded by the word warning.
