Performance testing will be a crucial part of ESPR and the Digital Product Passport. To avoid greenwashing claims, performance must be proven and must be verified by an independent third party.

Common Failure Points and What Causes Them

Based on real testing data from global footwear programs, these are the most frequent physical test failures and root causes. Understanding why shoes fail is the first step to preventing it.

Slip Resistance (SATRA TM144)	Outsole fails wet/dry CoF on quarry tile. Hydrodynamic slip.	Rubber hardness >65 Shore A, hydrophobic compound, shallow grooves <0.5 mm, smooth mold skin.
Flex Resistance (SATRA TM92)	Outsole cracking at forepart. Sole-upper debonding after high cycles.	Excessive filler, over-vulcanization, poor surface roughing, wrong adhesive system.
Abrasion (Martindale)	Rapid surface wear, pigment loss, hole formation before target cycles.	Weak surface finish, over-buffed leather, low GSM textiles, poor PU binder in microfiber.
Tear Resistance (ISO 17696)	Material tears at low force, abnormal tear behaviour.	Low fibre density, over-split leather, excessive softening, weak yarn twist.
Tensile Strength (ISO 17706)	Sudden break at low force, higher failure in across-direction.	Low-density leather, aged/hydrolysed PU coatings, cutting off-grain direction.
Colour fastness (ISO 17700)	Colour fading, dye transfer to socks/skin, perspiration failures.	Poor dye fixation, under-cured coatings, no anti-crocking agents.

Most physical failures are predictable. They come from material selection, process control, and design decisions. Our testing identifies the root cause, not just the symptom.

Slip Resistance Testing	SATRA TM144: multi-surface traction testing (wet, dry, oily) to substantiate anti-slip claims.
Waterproofness Verification	Dynamic and static water penetration on the complete shoe. BV Mark verification available.
Whole Shoe Flex Testing	SATRA TM92: repeated bending on the assembled shoe to detect sole separation, cracking, and structural failure.
Durability and Aging Testing	Accelerated aging, UV exposure, hydrolysis resistance, compression set to predict long-term wear.
In-Line QA and Production Inspection	Quality assurance embedded at every critical stage of production: cutting, stitching, lasting, assembly. Issues caught and fixed while the line is still running.
In-Line Production Inspection	IPI, DPI, and comprehensive inspection at key production milestones. Statistically valid sampling with full workmanship, function, and packaging checks.
PPE and Safety Footwear Certification	Full CE marking, toe cap impact/compression, puncture resistance, chemical resistance for protective footwear.
Virtual Fitting Solution	3D scanning and fit analysis to reduce sizing-driven returns.
Performance Claims Verification	Substantiation of waterproof, breathable, slip-resistant, thermal insulation, and other marketing claims.
