California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has added vinyl acetate to the list of chemicals known to the State of California as a carcinogen within California Proposition 65.
Background:
Vinyl Acetate is used to make polymers, such as polyvinyl acetate (PVA), polyvinyl alcohol, and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA). Vinyl acetate can also be used as a raw material in the production of textile fibers, adhesives, paints, coatings and food packaging, as well as other products.
OEHHA Action:
California’s OEHHA has determined that vinyl acetate is shown to cause cancer. Therefore, OEHHA added it to the Proposition 65 list as a carcinogen effective January 3, 2025.
The warning requirement for exposures to vinyl acetate will take effect on January 3, 2026, at which time 60 day notices could be issued.
