The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has decided to withdraw its proposed rulemaking that would have established federal safety standards for e-mobility devices like e-scooters and hoverboards.
Background:
The CPSC voted 3-2 on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, to advance a proposed solution to deadly lithium-ion battery fires. The solution would have required safety features such as the following:
- Battery management systems that would prevent charging or discharging when the batteries are in an unsafe state.
- Protections to ensure safe operation after wear and tear.
- Protections against incompatible chargers.
- Making battery packs tamper resistant.
On May 8th, 3 members of the board that originally voted for this proposal were terminated by the current administration. The remaining two members voted unanimously on May 13th to withdraw the proposal.
