Mar. 2 2022

Mexico has approved the Mexican STANDARD NOM-004-SE-2021, Commercial information-Labeling of textile products, clothing, accessories and household linen. This standard cancels NOM-004-SCFI-2006.

This update includes the following changes:

Accessories have been added to the scope of the standard.

Fiber labeling:
• Several new definitions were added, for example: QR code label, recycled fibers, recovered fibers, protection item, mass, fabric remains, etc.
• Section 4.3.1 is enriched with examples of fiber content labels.
• Section 4.3.3 is re-structured adding the terms: “otra” and “otras fibras” (“other” and “other fibers”).   Also, it is indicated that these terms can be written in capital letters, lowercase letters or initial capital letter and the rest in lowercase.
• When recovered or recycled fibers or mixtures of these with other virgin fibers are used, the percentages and generic names of each of the fibers must be indicated by the vendor, stating "recovered" or recycled" after the generic fiber name.
• Regarding tolerances, considerations for fiber present in a percentage < = 4.9 %, and some examples are added for clarity.
• The tolerance of +/- 6% for hosiery items was added.
• Examples of how to label ornamental, protective or reinforced parts were added.
• A new section was added regarding items with plastic or other materials used with textile, as well as terms that may be used for synthetic materials.
• The inclusion of a label with a QR code is optional and additional, but does not replace the required temporary and/or permanent labeling.

Care labeling:
• There are no updates for care labeling.

Country of origin:
• It is now acceptable to use the following abbreviations: United States of America: EUA, USA, EE.UU., in uppercase or lowercase, with periods or without periods. For the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: GBR, United Kingdom.
• The new regulation also allows the use of uppercase and lowercase letters.

NOM-004-SE-2021 will become effective on January 15, 2023.
